Great Taste Awards 2016
Simply delicious – two more Great Taste Awards for Stone’s Aston Marina!
Staffordshire’s waterside foodie haven, Aston Marina near Stone, has once again been recognised in the ‘Oscars’ of the foodie world.
The team is celebrating as dishes created by chefs from its renowned Bistro kitchen wowed the judges in the 2016 Guild of Fine Foods’ Great Taste Awards; the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink.
Following rigorous taste testing by a panel of 450 judges drawn from the great and good of the food industry, the marina’s Bearnaise Burger gained a coveted 2 stars, labelling it ‘Outstanding’. Judges commented it was “A good juicy burger with all the flavours of Bernaise coming through. Tarragon is there and a rich clean fat - there is the reduction, the egg and the herbs - all beautifully balanced.” Meanwhile, the marina butchery’s ‘free range Staffordshire pork, honey and mustard sausage’ was awarded 1 star; branding it ‘simply delicious’ and winning praise from judges for flavour and balance of seasoning.
This is the latest in a string of successes Great Taste Awards for the marina – last year its Salmon, Prawn & Dill Fishcake and Chocolate Tiffin were each awarded a star, and in 2013 it won stars for its Steak & Ale Pie and Triple Chocolate Brownie. Director, Helen Webb, says:
“We are hugely proud to have been recognised once again in what are the most important awards for the luxury food market. We’re especially delighted that the Bernaise burger won two stars – it’s made us all the more determined to strive for a rare 3 star award next year, so watch this space!”

Going for gold! Aston Marina scoops prestigious national food accolade
Dishes created by the chefs behind Aston Marina’s renowned Bistro have been awarded stars in the 2015 Guild of Fine Foods’ Great Taste Awards; the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink.
The Marina’s Salmon, Prawn & Dill Fishcake and Chocolate Tiffin both underwent blind taste testing under a judging panel made up of food critics, executive chefs, journalists and bigwigs in the food and drink industry. Each of the dishes was awarded a star; branding them ‘simply delicious’ and ranking among the 31% of the original 10,000 entries to gain accreditation.
This is not the first time the Marina, set just outside Stone on the banks of the Trent and Mersey Canal, has been recognised in what is often described as the ‘Oscars’ of fine food. Back in 2013, it won stars for its Steak & Ale Pie and Triple Chocolate Brownie; and the new accolades are testament to the creativity and hard work of the kitchen team. Director Helen Webb says:
“We pride ourselves on creating dishes that showcase the fresh, quality produce we are committed to using and to be recognised in the Great Taste Awards is a real coup. Our Head Chef has to take all the credit for his Chocolate Tiffin recipe, but the fish cake was more of a team effort, with all of us getting involved to perfect it - the chefs ended up with a perfect balance of crispy coating, lovely fish and brilliant balance of seasoning.
“To have our efforts recognised in one of the industry’s toughest awards is a real boost to the whole team at the Marina. It’s a reward for the hard work that goes in throughout the year and the fact that the team’s creativity is being judged by industry peers - who can be the harshest of critics - makes it all the more special.”
For the chance to sample these award-winning dishes and others on the gourmet a la carte menu, head to the Aston Marina Bistro. Booking is strongly advised - call 01785 819702.
